When I knew Steve at university, his hair was straight, but by this time, permed curly hair was obviously in fashion!! These photos must have been taken around the time of the first ELO album. The thin face and wire-framed glasses drew my attention to hime straight away. When I opened your email this morning, I only read the first couple of lines and my eye was immediately attracted to the photo - before I read the next line I recognised Steve as the person identified as you say. Got a question about if I could confirm that it is Steve Woolam on my picture collage of this page, and I sent a mail to Roger Grainer again, and here is his answer. "My other memory of him was that his thumb on his left hand had grown at an unusual angle - it obviously helped his violin playing!" "I remember replying to a blog by someone enquiring about Steve, and I was the one whom Roy Wood nearly ran over in Stourbridge High St. "I still have happy memories of chatting in his very dodgy bedsit in Edgbaston, which was just an outhouse of a big Victorian house - his bed was simply a platform suspended by chains from the ceiling!" "When I graduated, I worked in Dudley, and was browsing through vinyl in a shop and saw his name on the first ELO album I still have it". He and Roger lost touch.Ī couple of years later, he heard that he'd died. No-one seemed to know why he didn't return, apart from rumours, that he'd joined a new group. Roger had no idea that Steve was goin' to leve university and he was therefor surprised that Steve didn't return in the autum term of 1969. Today the 16-1-2016, I got a mail from Roger, that was a good friend to Steve for about 12 months, while they were on Birmingham University and he tells me that Steve was a very good violinist. If there is any more info you guys want, please let me know. My sister Sally, has written music for Aphex Twin. Steven was awarded the Gold Medal for the Violin aged 11 with the highest ever marks for grade 8! My mother, Lesley Hilda Woolam was a professional Opera Singer and studied at the Guildhall School of Music. Our family were big musicians, my Grandfather Joe was self taught on the violin and taught my Uncle. Jagger, that he did not get paid for and left him in a huge amount of debt. My Uncle then wrote music for a certain Mr. He indeed co-wrote alot of the tracks on the first album, a fact I think Roy Wood would agree with." A comment above about him not really being a member of the The Electric Light Orchestra and that he was just a studio violinist is completely inaccurate. On his death, my grandfather and father had to identify the body. Also a major fall out with Roy Wood we think was a factor in him taking his own life. It was'nt wholly to do with him leaving the group, he met the wrong women unfortunately, that drained him financially and led him onto drugs. "You are correct, he did commit suicide by jumping in 1971, a fact that my family have struggled to deal with even to this day. "I may be able to fill in some of the blanks and give you some extra info". The tracks of Roy Wood seemed like his own solo project, except maybe the First Movement, which was his best track in that album. Steve Woolam was never really a part of The Electric Light Orchestra. It is easy to hear the violin on those tracks. Radio, Manhattan Rumble and Queen of the Hours. But only on Jeff Lynne tracks ! It's Nellie Takes Her Bow, Mr. Steve Woolam played violin in the first The Electric Light Orchestra album. In fact Roy Wood was driving down Stourbridge High Street in a brown Rolls Royce a couple of years later.Īfter graduation Steve was working near Dudley. He came originally from Bilston (in the Black Country) and that would certainly make sense of his association with Roy Wood whom, wich was living near Stourbridge at the time. He quit the course at the end of his second year in Summer 1969 and moved away. He was an excellent violinist and he had quite good friends. Steve went to Birmingham University in the late 60's. He was The Electric Light Orchestra's Violinist in 1971. ?, 1946, Bilston in the Black Country, England.

People with color blindness and dyslexia had a hard time picking up the game. It's just confusing.”Īdams also pointed out that the ASCII art style alienated a number of different potential players. And then you can't tell what's up and what's down. “If the lower level is a darker green, well, there's only one darker green available, and it might clash with some of the darker green stuff that's above. “Before, when I had 16 colors, I couldn't do that,” Adams said. With some clever shading techniques, it’s easier to create a multi-leveled fortress in a 2D space. It’s like leafing through pages of a book. In its current form, players move between layers of the game individually and have to keep track of the whole fortress in their mind. Dwarf Fortress allows players to build a fortress with multiple levels and that’s hard to navigate in ASCII. One of the big issues Adams is hoping to tackle is topography. “We’re going to look at the interface and the menu structure and common problems that new players have that make them bounce off the game.” “All of the accessibility questions for Dwarf Fortress are on the table,” Adams said. I’m super happy with how this is going.”īut the 2D facelift isn’t just about changing the art style, it’s about opening the game up to more people, making it accessible, and fixing legacy issues. “It has a harrowed look to it, it’s not a happy little Snow White dwarf. “I’m really happy with the dwarf that Mayday Mike drew,” Adams said. Kitfox Games' Creative Director Tanya Short brought on Dwarf Fortress modders Mike “Mayday” Madej and Patrick "Meph" Martin Schroeder to build the tileset for the Steam release. They really understand the game.”īay 12 Games partnered with developer Kitfox Games. At the same time, the people that we’ve brought on to make the tileset have both been with the community for ten years each. “In some sense, it’s not possible,” Adams said. He knows that leaving ASCII behind will change the game, but he still wants to preserve its soul. Adams said he thinks Bay 12 Games has used the six sided star for 15 different objects.Īdams is conscious that, while ASCII has its limitations, there’s something iconic about the art style. He pointed out a six pointed star which Dwarf Fortress uses for a turtle, a campfire, and a gem. “Even with color, I’ve run into overlaps now,” Adams said. There’s only 128 ASCII characters to choose from, which is why a goose, a goblin, and a gremlin all use the same letter-a lowercase g. “We released in ASCII and kept working in ASCII for that reason-the development was so fast and we were not qualified to draw,” Adams said.Īs Bay 12 Games continued to develop Dwarf Fortress, it ran up against the limitations of that choice. They effectively didn’t have to worry about art. They kept the ASCII style because working with it was fast. Bay 12 Games kept adding elements, tweaking it, and eventually realized its simple turn-based game about mining had turned into a procedurally generated real-time strategy simulation. It is restrictive,” Adams told me over the phone.Īccording to Adams, the decision to use ASCII in the first place was pure happenstance.“ started as an ASCII game called Mutant Miner…it was supposed to be this little throwaway game.”īut Mutant Miner kept evolving. “ASCII is not purely an aesthetic choice. In fact, Adams thinks that the 2D change presents unique opportunities to make the game more accessible and fix legacy issues with Dwarf Fortress. The Adams brothers teamed up with developer Kitfox Games (the studio behind Shrouded Isle) and its own modding community to update Dwarf Fortress’ art style without abandoning its soul. Developer Tarn Adams, (who founded Bay 12 games with his brother Zach) wants to give Dwarf Fortress to a whole new group of people. Moving away from the iconic look will change the game but it might change it for the better. The unique ASCII art style defined the game for the better part of two decades. Selling the game isn’t the only radical change-the Steam version of Dwarf Fortress would abandon its iconic ASCII art style in favor of a 2D tileset. On March 13, Bay 12 Games announced it would begin selling Dwarf Fortress through Steam and Itch.io. Now, that's changing.įor 15 years, Bay 12 Games gave away Dwarf Fortressthe game for free and supported development through donations and a Patreon. There’s nothing that looks or plays quite like it. But players had to imagine the cat vomit because Dwarf Fortress is rendered entirely in ASCII-a vast fantasy world created with less graphical fidelity than you'll find in a Word Document. Now, I don't remember installing manufacturer drivers for my other monitors, buy maybe I did when I installed them. I was deleting old unused monitor devices ("Show hidden devices") when I realized my primary monitor (the newest) was the only one without a proper driver. I copy-pasted Stephen's solution in the end of this post, since no one seems to have done it yet. I found the definitive solution to this: do as Stephen, ( st99), says here in the ninth answer – Soldeplata Saketos (at 8:48 ) When I went about following the instructions for the (highly voted) comment below, I noticed in Device Manager one of my monitors was "Generic PnP Monitor". I have three monitors and this problem was driving me nuts (actually irking me every time I woke my PC, and then I'd forget about it). The solution for me was to simply install drivers for my newest monitor. The forced resolution will override detection of the screen and should persist through sleep. However if this is unavailable, you can use the Windows Resolution window to detect devices while the monitor is disconnected, then select the display which will report “Another Display Not Connected”, then under Multiple Displays, you can drop down and select “Try to connect anyway” which will broadcast a signal to the monitor over the port type you have selected (the signal will not be interactive), then connect the display which should interpret the signals sent to it properly. You can usually force the detection of a monitor within the graphics driver control panel. If the issue is still not resolved after updating the drivers, it may be due to an unusually reported display ID (EDID). Update your graphics drivers from the manufacturer to resolve the issue. Usually this will be caused by the graphics driver not properly supporting sleep modes and therefore disabling the ability to detect a connected display when the computer goes to sleep. I don't know why there are three configs, I have only ever used one So for some reason one of the configs does not get set correctly. Moving/resize issue returned, but the lower right corner was set to I changed these to 1600x900 and the problem was solved.įurther I changed resolution (via control panel) to 1920x1080, the The third ( SIMULATED.) were set to 1024x768. When waking from sleep, all my windows had been pushed to one display, and some of them resized. I'm running Windows 8.1 with two 2560x1440 displays on DisplayPort. So that places the word squarely on the left coast of Britain, not North America. 1" refers to the following bibliography entry: I 'a bin up all night an fare kienda owly this morning. However, The English Dialect Dictionary: M-Q from 1903 has the following quote: Think of a grumpy faced owl, that's being owlie. When my mother called me to get up and get ready for school, I yelled "Do you have to be so loud?" She said, "Oh, feeling owly this morning, are we?" owly (punctuation and capitalization edited) One of the Urban Dictionary entries asserts that "owly" is common in Nova Scotia: All the three dictionaries below say that owly is a word in Suffolk dialect. The meaning might have expanded in time or this usage might be unrelated and archaic in British English. Coupled with the owl’s intense, piercing stare, you have a perfect visual metaphor for someone in a persistently implacable bad mood.Īn older dialectal dictionary gives the meaning as stupid and tired for owly and sleepy and stupid for owlish. Many species of owl have tufts of feathers above their eyes, making the bird resemble a little man with his brow furrowed in disapproval and annoyance. “Owly” as a synonym for “cranky” or “irritable” appears to draw on another aspect of the owl’s appearance. The Oxford English Dictionary lists “owly” first as a synonym of “owlish,” meaning, literally, “resembling an owl,” but usually applied to people who exhibit an unblinking, calm (but often critical) gaze, similar to that of a wide-eyed owl (“The little man with his most owlish air of wisdom,” I. Since at least the mid-19th century, “owly” has been a colloquial term meaning “cranky, cross, angry or fretful.” It’s considered a regional usage, found largely in eastern Canada and the Upper Midwest of the US. Such is the case with “owly,” which is indeed how it’s spelled. It also relates the term to owl's appearance: The Word Detective also talks about the origin of this term based on a question asked by a Nova Scotian whose mother called her and her sister "owly" when they were in irritable moods. There is a strong evidence that it might be originated from Nova Scotia or around that region in colloquial usage: They look grumpy! (at least most of them). The most common site of a cramp as we age is in the calf. Or, there can be cramps in leg muscles that make walking or running difficult. The cramps can and often do impair function, for example, writer’s cramp occurs in muscles of the hand making it impossible to write. The longer the cramp lasts the more likely the muscle will be sore for a prolonged period after the acute pain has subsided. The spasm may last only a few seconds or up to 15 minutes. There always is the sensation of a tense or tight muscle that feels very hard compared to other relaxed muscles. There may be tenderness on touching the muscle with ones hands. The pain is localized at the site of the muscle. The most important sign is intense pain caused by the extreme tightening of the muscle. It is easy to self-diagnose muscle spasms and cramps. Neither of these conditions is voluntary, meaning we did not intentionally tighten the muscle as we might when lifting a weight. In other words the process begins as a muscle spasm which is a tightening of the muscle and if it persists it becomes a cramp. If the contraction is sustained for more than several seconds it moves from being a muscle in spasm to a muscle cramp. The medical definition of this is the contraction of a muscle or muscle group that is unintentional. One of the many things to “go wrong” as we age is the unwanted and often painful involuntary contraction of muscles in our legs and sometimes other areas. They’re important to getting your head around CAM as things operate differently based on how many dimensions are involved. They’re also very useful for thinking about Feeds and Speeds (our G-Wizard Calculator’s CADCAM Wizards are built around toolpaths) and CNC Job Quoting (our G-Wizard Estimator also uses the same CADCAM Wizards for job estimation and quoting so the results match what you’ll get on your Shop Floor).īefore delving into specific CAM Operation and Toolpath Categories, I want to talk briefly about Dimensions. This article is all about teaching you what those Operations and Toolpaths are so you’ll have an idea of how to go about choosing them as you use your CAM Software. But not always–“2D Profiling” cuts “Vertical Walls” around the outside of a part, for example. This is typically done by selecting various CAM Operations or Toolpaths.Īn Operation or Toolpath is typically aimed at machining a particular Feature on the part, and we often refer to the Toolpath and the Feature by the same name, such as a “Hole” or a “Pocket”. The task of CAM software is to carve the block until you have set your part free. You have a vision of the part that needs to be made in the form of a CAD model or drawing. You’ve got a piece of raw stock, perhaps a block of 6061 aluminum. Much the same could be said of what goes on when using CAM software. When asked about his statue of David, Michelangelo said, “I saw the angel in the marble and carved until I set him free.” CAM Toolpaths and Operations have a lot in common with sculptureĬAM Programming is the process of using CAM Toolpaths and Operations to set your part free from the block of material it resides in. There are other setups viable but if you are able to get this deck you are golden for at least 3 of the 4 achievements as The Transient is a random encounter.Dedicated to all discussion on the game Slay the Spire by Mega Crit Games. Avoid (if possible) getting curses, save your gold for removals and pray to the RNG Gods for lots of card removal events and favourable Relics like the Peace Pipe and Smiling Mask.Ī picture says more than a thousand words: The hardest part with the Minimalist achievement is obviously the removal of cards. You could replace Clash for any damage card. I have grouped all of these achievements together as you can get 3 out of 4 (if not all 4) achievements in one run with a 5-deck setup containing the following cards: Bash+, 2x Dropkick+, Shrug it off+, Clash+. Beat the game with a 5-card deck or smaller) (18. Perfect (16.Defeat the Transient before it fades away) (17. *Apparantly this is not the case anymore, and you can get the achievement with a curse(s) in your deck.ġ6. Note: A Curse can void your Common Sense achievement as it is not considered a common card. The Armaments card (preferably upgraded) can be a great asset in the beginning of your run. Focus on getting multiple upgraded Body Slam cards accompanied by defensive cards like Shrug It Off. If you feel you lack AOE you can add Thunderclap and/or Cleave to your deck.Ī more defensive Ironclad deck revolving around Body Slam is another route you can take. I wouldn't recommend casting Wild Strike often (if any) on longer battles as it will fill up your deck with Wounds making your hand crippled and preventing you from playing the Clash card. As this deck is an offensive deck, adding 1 or more Clash cards is recommended. An Ironclad deck revolving around Perfected Strike works if you fill up your deck with additional Strike cards (Pommel Strike, Twin Strike, Wild Strike, Perfected Strike). Common Sense (Beat the game with a deck containing no uncommons or rares) Relics: Calipers, Prismatic Shard, Unceasing Top, Anchor, Self-Forming Clay, Thread and Needleġ5. You could build a deck with a Focus/Frost orb setup (Echo, Capacitor, Consume, Loop, Hologram, Fission, Coolheaded, Glacier) or a “raw” block setup (Echo, Hologram, Reinforced Body, Equilibrium, Charge Battery) where you keep increasing your block ( > 15 per turn).Īnother option, but very RNG dependant, is by getting hold of the Prismatic Shard relic and hope that you get Barricade as a cardreward somewhere down the line. As there is no card that retains your block in the Defects arsenal, getting your hands on the Calipers relic is highly desirable. There are more to list here, but as you want to keep a small deck i would obviously only pick the ones that suit your deck.ĭefect: I personally think getting these achievements with the Defect is the most cumbersome. Recommended additional cards for this deck are: Well-Laid Plans, Adrenaline, Escape Plan, Dodge and Roll, Outmaneuver and Deflect. You should aim for a small deck where Burst + Blur (preferably several upgraded copies) is your bread and butter. The Silent: Getting these achievements with the Silent requires more planning, but is viable. Of course, a combination of these work as well. If the RNG Gods don’t bless you with these cards you can also go for the slower Dual Wield + Metallicize setup (not recommended though). This is the fastest way to obtain these achievements. Ironclad: I recommend going for a Barricade + Entrench setup. Other helpful relics are Ancient Tea Set, Art of War, Happy Flower, Lantern, Sundial, Busted Crown, Coffee Dripper, Cursed Key, Ectoplasm, Fusion Hammer, Mark of Pain, Philosopher Stone, Runic Dome, Sozu, Velvet choker.ġ1. Relics: there are numerous relics that will help with this achievement but the Ice Cream relic is probably favourable. Adding Aggragrate to your deck is only viable if you have a beefy deck. You could also go with mutiple Plasma orbs, where adding Capacitator and Consume to your deck would be recommended. For example: you could recycle Meteorstike for zero energy (with an upgraded Recycle) and then play Double Energy or Turbo. There are multiple ways to play this out, depending on your hand. The Defect: Echo + Energy/Plasma cards (Double Energy, Recycle, Turbo, Fusion and Meteorstrike) is the deck you should be aiming for. I recommend going with the ones requiring the least amount of setup, for example: Outmaneuver following a Burst plus Adrenaline and/or Concentrate combo. The Silent: there are several +Energy cards (upgraded prefered) to help you obtain this achievement. I recommend doing this with either The Silent or Defect. Adrenaline (Have 9 Energy during a single turn of combat) |
